Mallacoota Preschool becomes a work of art

November 6, 2023 Community Connection

Mallacoota Preschool has recently been transformed by an extensive beautiful mural that incorporates features that are close to the community’s heart.

Arranged and funded by the Parent Advisory Group along with the wider community and local group, Mallacoota and District Kids, the mural was completed in just four days, by artist Sam Wortelhock. Sam, from Breakaway Art, travels far and wide, creating original masterpieces on schools, early childhood centres and other buildings.

To the delight of children, families and residents, depicted on the preschool’s walls are the Gabo Island Light House, the Howe Range, the local jetty, pelicans, abalone, expanses of ocean, bushland and even a whale!

Stacey Palmer, President of the Parent Advisory Group, said, “We wanted to create something that was unique to Mallacoota and something the community could be proud of. We asked the artist to incorporate all that we love about Mallacoota and she did an absolutely amazing job.”

Leone Wallace, teacher at the kindergarten had the excitement of watching it all unfold over such a short time period. “It certainly has made our front entrance a memorable one and a joyful space for the kinder children and families to meet and play before and after kinder,” she said.

Passersby have been stopping and spending time admiring the artwork and enjoying identifying the local landmarks and wildlife.
