Nangiloc Kindergarten’s approach to educating children about healthy eating and their support for National Nutrition Week did not go unnoticed.
The kindergarten won the $300 prize in Sunraysia’s Community Health Services’ competition, organised locally as part of the Week. The judging team from Health Promotions was incredibly impressed by the kindergarten’s committed approach to encouraging good nutrition through eating a range of fruit and vegetables every day.
Gayle Collett, Teacher at the kinder, explained that the team regularly incorporates learning about the importance of eating healthily into their program.
“We designed hands-on interactive activities to teach children about different fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods. Games, stories and sensory experiences are used to make learning about healthy eating fun and engaging,” she said.
“We also love that we have our own vegetable beds to grow fresh produce. We bring this into the kindergarten to support learning independence skills and to cook and eat!”
As the prize was for kitchen appliances, the kinder is hoping to get an electric juicer, rice cooker, food processor and blender. With these additions, the kinder team is excitedly thinking of all the new recipes to try and the learning that can take place!
