Located in a beautiful setting, in Croydon (City of Maroondah), Pinjarra Kindergarten embraces the outdoors, with native birdsong and nature surrounding every adventure.
With an enhanced focus on the incorporation of First Nations’ perspectives in their program, each day begins with an Acknowledgment of Country spoken and signed in Auslan, reinforcing their shared pledge to care for the land of the Wurundjeri people.
The kinder children also venture out on regular “Walking on Country” excursions, connecting children with community, culture, and Country.
Children learn about caring for the environment and actions that can be taken to live more sustainably – taking only what they need, conserving water, recycling and composting.
Recently, while on a Walking on Country trek, several children commented about rubbish they noticed on a favourite route – the Tarralla Trail.
“During our Acknowledgement of Country, we promise to take care of the land,” explained Tracey Webb, Pinjarra Kindergarten’s Educational Leader. “Recently, the children were concerned about the amount of litter on the local track where we walk. We discussed this, and their solution was to go armed with bags and tongs on our next excursion. They set to work cleaning up the trail and filled many bags.
Alongside many of the other activities we do as part of the program, it was a great initiative to show how we can all be active participants in caring for our environment.”
